How to prepare for a doctor visit: checklist
What to bring, which tests and documents to prepare, and how to describe your symptoms. A practical checklist before a clinic visit.
Why prepare ahead
Good preparation saves the clinician’s time and makes it less likely that important details get lost. On Medcards you can keep prior visits, lab results, and referrals in one place — and share selected records with a clinic when needed.
Below is a universal checklist. It does not replace your clinician’s advice and does not diagnose.
Documents and data
Bring an ID, your insurance card if you have one, referrals, and recent discharge notes.
List medications with doses and any allergies. If you keep a medcard in Medcards — open it on your phone or prepare a limited-access share link.
Write questions for the doctor in advance: symptoms, start date, what makes it better or worse, and tests already done.
Labs and imaging
If the clinic asked for tests before the visit — confirm fasting rules and how many hours to avoid food or drink.
Bring results in a readable form (PDF or a clear photo). In Medcards you can attach files to a visit so history does not scatter across messengers.
On the day of the visit
Arrive 10–15 minutes early, especially at a new clinic.
Do not cancel silently: if plans change, cancel or reschedule so the slot opens for someone else.
After the visit, save prescriptions and next steps in your medcard — follow-ups are easier to remember.
